8.2 Principal Types of Losses and Benefits

Disability Income (Loss of Time or Income)

Disability income is designed to replace a portion of an insured individual’s earnings if they become unable to work due to injury or sickness. Benefits are typically paid on a weekly or monthly basis during the period of disability. The amount payable is generally structured as either a specified percentage of the insured’s prior earnings or a predetermined flat dollar amount stated in the policy.

Medical Expense

Medical expense provides coverage for healthcare costs incurred as a result of illness or injury. Covered expenses may include physician services, hospital care, diagnostic testing, and other medically necessary treatments as defined in the policy.

Dental Expense

Dental expense is a specialized form of medical expense insurance that provides coverage for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental conditions affecting the teeth and supporting oral structures. Covered services may include examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and other dental procedures, depending on the policy provisions.

Long-Term Care Expense

Long-term care insurance is designed to provide coverage for personal care and assistance services needed when an individual is unable to perform certain activities of daily living due to chronic illness, disability, or aging. Care may be provided in various settings, including nursing homes, assisted living facilities, adult day care centers, or the insured’s home.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance provides benefits when an insured experiences death or specified serious injuries as the result of an accident. The policy pays the principal sum (face amount) in the event of accidental death, loss of sight in both eyes, or the loss of two limbs. A capital sum, often up to 50% of the principal sum, may be paid for the loss of one limb or the loss of sight in one eye. AD&D coverage may be issued as a stand-alone policy or included as a rider attached to a disability income, medical expense, or life insurance policy.

Home Health Care

Home health care benefits provide coverage for certain healthcare services delivered in the insured’s residence. These services may include limited nursing care, assistance from a home health aide, light housekeeping related to patient care, and other supportive services. Home health care benefits are commonly included in both medical expense insurance and long-term care insurance policies.
